2017 Spotted Wing Drosophila Workshop

Date: June 5, 2017
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: MSU Trevor Nichols Research Center, 6237 124th Avenue, Fennville, MI 49408
Contact: Carlos Garcias Salazar, garcias4@msu.edu, 616-994-4545

Why should I attend this workshop?
In 2015, 50 percent of the growers attending similar training and after applying what they learned reported benefits including: one or two applications less than in 2014 and average pest control expenses of $175 versus $375 per acre in 2014. In addition, in 2015, those attending the training reported crop losses due to SWD averaging 9 % of their crop versus 18.5% in 2014.

Why is the 2017 training under a Systems Approach different from other training offered in previous years?

In 2016, the training was reformatted to incorporate new concepts and research advances on the control and management of the SWD under a Systems Approach. Under this approach, growers learn to use:

  • The SWD biology and behavior to target its most sensitive life stages to optimize their pest management.
  • The chemical characteristics of recommended insecticides to understand how the insecticide performs under a variety of weather conditions: when and how to utilize each one of the recommended insecticides.
  • Enviroweather’s weather information to select the best insecticides depending on the current and forecasted weather conditions.
  • Finally, there will be a hands-on session dedicated to discuss and elaborate a successful IPM program for SWD control using Enviroweather and MSUE resources provided during the classroom sessions. If you have a lap-top computer please bring it with you for the hands-on session.  The agenda for the training is as follows:
