MSU Extension is hosting their annual Hops Field Day and Tour on Friday, July 29, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. This year, participants will meet at Incredible Mo’s near Chums Corners in Traverse City (for parking vehicles) and board a chartered bus and travel to Midwest Organic Hops (Grower: Leonard Olson Farm Corp) near Bear Lake to tour an organic hop yard and learn about organic growing and production practices, and co-owners Doug Olson & Duce Olson will talk about the Midwest Organic Hops’ collaborative marketing and sales. Erin Lizotte, MSU Extension Integrated Pest Management Educator will also speak about “Hop IPM.” Participants will then travel to Lunch will be at Stormcloud Brewing Company, and a chat with brewer Brian Confer and co-owner Rick Schmitt about their operation. After lunch, we will visit with Bruce Lundin, owner of a new 42 acre hop yard (Big Daddy Hops) near Empire. Just a short drive down the road participants will visit Empire Hops Farm, one of Michigan’s first established hop yards, for a discussion with the owners on best production practices. The group will have an educational beer tasting led by Scott Graham of the Michigan Brewers Guild on the farm. (More details later, but we ask if you have a chair-in-a-bag, or other portable chair, please bring it with you). Throughout the tour hop growers will be on site to discuss all aspects of hop productio: initial costs, plant care, disease and insect management, trellis construction, quality control, propagation, organic and conventional growing practices, and harvesting. The tour will then end and return to Incredible Mo’s, and folks are invited to enjoy a craft beer (on your own) in the tavern.
The cost is $85 per person which includes lunch, charter bus transportation, education and handouts. Pre-registration is required by debit/credit card and space is limited. Due to the popularity of this event, payment is due at the time of online registration. Because of liability issues and space, participants will NOT be allowed to drive their personal vehicle on this tour.
We thank our gracious program sponsors: Michigan Brewers Guild, Midwest Organic Hops, Leonard Olson Farm Corp, Big Daddy Hops, Empire Hops Farm, and Incredible Mo’s
